Overview of the Tecno Camon 16s

The Tecno Camon 16s was announced in November 2020 and launched later the same month. It is a budget smartphone from Tecno with a good blend of features and cost-effectiveness. The Tecno Camon 16s price in Kenya at launch was competitive considering the number of features that they were able to pack into the device.

Design and Build

The Tecno Camon 16s has a glass front, plastic frame and plastic back which is to be expected at its price point. The back is plastic with a camera mount bump at the centre which houses the quad-camera setup.

The colour options available are Ice Jadeite, Misty Grey and Blue Hawaii. The Tecno Camon 16s is a medium-sized smartphone at 164.5 x 76.5 x 9 mm. The weight of the phone is however not specified on the official Tecno website.

The screen is huge at 6.6″ IPS LCD with a resolution of 720 x 1600 pixels and an approximately 83.6% screen-to-body ratio with a 20:9 ratio. The pixels density is quite low at only 266ppi, so considering how big the screen is the images are not as sharp as one would expect.

User Interface and Performance

The Camon 16s is shipped with a custom UI, HIOS 6.2 which is built on top of Android 10 and should be upgradeable to Android 11. It comes with a Mediatek MT6762 Helio P22 (12 nm) chipset with an Octa-core 2.0 GHz Cortex-A53 and a PowerVR GE8320 GPU. The phone has 128GB of storage both with 4GB RAM making it quite handy in multitasking but the dedicated card slot support is not indicated.

Camera Quality

The camera setup on the Tecno Camon 16s consists of the main camera that is a quad with a 48 MP, f/1.8, (wide), 1/2.0″, 0.8µm, PDAF, 2 MP, f/2.4, (macro), 2 MP, f/2.4, (depth) and an AI Lens. It has a Quad-LED flash which supports HDR and panorama. The selfie camera is a single 8 MP with Dual-LED flash.

Video Recording

The Tecno Camon 16s records videos using the rear or main camera at 1080p@30fps. The selfie or front camera records video at 1080p@30fps.

Connectivity and Features

The Tecno Camon 16s comes with dual SIM slots using nano-SIM and supports dual standby which will help most usage. It also supports wireless LAN Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, dual-band, Wi-Fi Direct and hotspot. The Bluetooth is version 5.0 with A2DP and LE, to connect to a host of devices. Has GPS with A-GPS. It however lacks NFC connectivity which is a bummer as reduces automation. It supports USB Type-C 2.0 and  USB On-The-Go.

The highlight of any modern smartphone features for a mid-ranger is accelerometer, proximity and compass and the Tecno Camon 16s has all of these. It also comes with FM Radio support and a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor.

Battery

The Tecno 16s Premier has a non-removable battery with a capacity of Li-Po 5000mAh non-removable battery and supports fast charging at 18W which Tecno claims can charge 50% in 30mins. It however does not support wireless charging.
