Design and Build
Â
The Galaxy A51’s back panel is made of plastic, so we wouldn’t put our faith in it for long-term use; a sheet of Gorilla Glass would have given us more respect. Corning’s 3rd-generation glass is used on the front, so your show should be cleaner.
The phone’s frame is plastic, as it was last year, and the A51’s physical buttons are all on the right, much like the A50 – what was the point of the Note10’s “buttons on the left” switcheroo? The buttons themselves have good travel, but if you push them off-centre, they don’t click as satisfyingly.
The Galaxy A51 has a 6.5-inch Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 1080 by 2400 pixels and a 20:9 aspect ratio that is unusual for a Samsung. It’s an Infinity-O panel, which means the selfie camera is accessed via a punch hole rather than a notch of some kind or form. The A51 and A71 were the company’s first non-flagship phones to do so, with the Lite S10 and Note10 following suit.

User Interface and Performance
The Galaxy A51 is one of the first Samsung phones to boot Android 10 out of the box, complete with the latest custom One UI 2.0. It’s nice to see that new models are launching with their software already up to date, as opposed to having to wait several months for an OTA.
The Galaxy A51 is powered by Samsung’s Exynos 9611 chipset, which is a small upgrade over the 9610 used in last year’s model and only adds support for high-resolution cameras. In fact, we noticed an improvement in performance on the M30s, which also uses the 9611, indicating that there’s more to the spec-sheets than meets the eye.
In any case, this Exynos is made on a 10nm process and features an octa-core CPU with a traditional 2×4 configuration – 4×2.3GHz Cortex-A73 and 4×1.7GHz Cortex-A53. Mali-G72 MP3 is the GPU. There are three RAM/storage options: 4/64GB, 4/128GB, and 6/128GB, with our review unit being the middle of the three.
Camera Quality
The camera setup on the Galaxy A51 is very impressive. It all begins with a 48MP Quad Bayer main chip, which can be found on nearly every midrange today. Then there’s the 12MP ultra wide-angle camera, which is a step up from the 8MP ultra wides Samsung has been putting on anything that isn’t a flagship.
And here’s where things get interesting: the A51 also has a 5MP macro sensor, while most other phones only have a 2MP unit for close-ups. As compared to the current ultra-wide macro units, it’s also a longer lens on the A51, with an equivalent focal length of 25mm, requiring you to stick the phone into your topic less.
The A51’s selfies come out at 12MP, rather than the sensible 8MP that the 4-to-1 conversion we’ve come to expect from Quad Bayers will yield. We believe the phone does the binning from 32MP to 8MP, then upscales to 12MP for a more appealing number. A 32MP mode is also available, but it lacks HDR, so we recommend skipping it.
Video Recording
With all of its standalone cameras – including the main camera and the ultra-wide on the rear, as well as the selfie camera – the Galaxy A51 records video up to 4K30. Surprisingly, it does not support 1080p at 60 frames per second.
The video quality is adequate for a mid-range phone, but it will not impress you. The video from the main camera has correct colours and is beautifully contrasted, with a strong dynamic range. When you zoom in close, the 4K looks overprocessed and isn’t impressive pixel for pixel. 1080p, on the other hand, is sharpened more conservatively and is very appealing.
Battery Life
The Galaxy A51 comes with a 4,000mAh battery, which is the same capacity as the model it replaces and is fairly standard in the segment. While using the same chipset, the A51 has a slightly larger monitor and a different operating system, so we expected at least a small improvement in battery life, which we got.
The Galaxy A51 charges from flat to complete in 2:14 hours with the included adapter, which isn’t spectacular but adequate. We were looking at 35% at the 30-minute mark, which is also not praiseworthy.
