Design and Build
The Galaxy A31’s design layout has been similarly refreshed for 2020 to the Galaxy A51. In fact, in terms of overall footprint and silhouette, the two are strikingly similar. The A31 is slightly thicker than its A51 counterpart, measuring 159.3 x 73.1 x 8.6 mm. The thickness is the same way.
In Samsung’s current lineup, the Galaxy A31 is one of the more affordable choices with an OLED screen. PLS TFT is included in most budget options after that. This alone is a compelling justification to accept an A31. While Super AMOLED is an older generation technology in Samsung’s lineup, it still delivers excellent results.

User Interface and Performance
The Samsung Galaxy A31 comes preloaded with Samsung’s most recent and up-to-date apps, which includes Android 10 with OneUI 2.1 on top. The most recent improvements are minor and mainly seek to improve the overall experience. Current Samsung users on older devices, on the other hand, should feel right at home with the general layout.
The Galaxy A31 isn’t exactly a powerhouse, thanks to its MediaTek MT6768 Helio P65 chipset. Even on paper, the combination of two Cortex-A75 cores running at 2.0 GHz and six Cortex-A55 cores running at 1.7 GHz does not scream results.
Camera Quality
In certain ways, Samsung’s camera choices for the Galaxy A31 are anticipated and unsurprising. Although devices like the Galaxy A51 and Galaxy M31 add a few twists to a standard mid-ranger configuration, the A31 sticks to the status quo.
The primary 48MP Quad Bayer camera is likely to be found on the most modern midrange. It is trustworthy and has proved it’s worth numerous times. On the A31, it’s accompanied by an 8MP ultrawide camera. It’s a significant downgrade from the A51’s 12MP camera.
A pair of 5MP cameras complement these two: one is a dedicated depth sensor with a higher-than-average megapixel count and an equivalent focal length of around 26mm, allowing you to stand a little further away from your subject. Finally, there’s a 5MP depth sensor to help with portrait shots. Or, as advertised on the A31, “Live focus.”
The selfie camera on the Galaxy A31 is 20MP and f/2.2. Despite this, it creates images with a resolution of about 8 megapixels. The sensor used here is the SK Hynix Hi-2021, which is smaller than its predecessor’s 1.12m sensor. It makes use of the Bayer algorithm. Returning to the 8MP number, there appears to be some constant upscaling going on.
Video Recording
When it comes to video capture, the Galaxy A31 is woefully underpowered. The Helio P65’s DSP, despite having the theoretical resolution to capture 4K video, is incapable of doing so. The A31 is limited to 1080p at 30 frames per second. Also with the default app, you can’t get 60 frames per second at 720p. The latter is possible with the help of a third-party app like Open Camera, but the FullHD restriction remains.
Battery Life
The Galaxy A31 comes with a 5,000 mAh battery. Larger than the Galaxy A51’s 4,000 mAh battery and even the Galaxy A41’s 3,500 mAh battery. The Galaxy M21 and M31 do have a 6,000 mAh battery, which may be significant in this case.
The Galaxy A31, as well as the existing Galaxy A and Galaxy M families, have a 15W charging cap. On the current smartphone scene, that’s nothing to write home about. Even so, there is a case to be made for slowing down the charging speed to reduce battery degradation over time.
We were able to get about 30% of the battery charge in 30 minutes while charging from zero, with a complete charge taking nearly 3 hours (2:48h). On a budget unit, it’s perfectly serviceable, but it’s not a chart-topper.
