Overview of the Huawei Y7a
Samsung Huawei Y7a was launched in October of 2020. Apart from the trade disagreement between the US and China that caused the lack of Google services on this phone, it comes with well-rounded specs at a modest price.

Design and Build
The Huawei Y7a has a modern look that isn’t too distinctive. The phone has no poshness ambitions, but it doesn’t look or sound cheap either, thanks to its plastic back and midframe.
On the front, the 6.67-inch panel is encircled by a black border that is thicker than you’d find on a flagship but still in line with other phones in its class. In reality, the Huawei handset and the 6.67-inch Poco X3 NFC and Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 Pro have nearly identical bezels and footprints. However, in terms of bezels, the Huawei y7a 2021 is similar to any other phone in its price range.
For what it’s worth, the Huawei Y7a comes with a 6.67-inch touchscreen. It’s a 20:9 LCD screen with a pixel density of 395ppi and a resolution of 1080x2400px. It has a maximum brightness of 442nits, which is a low number, particularly for an LCD. With adaptive brightness turned on, we didn’t see any improvement.

User Interface and Performance
The Huawei Y7a is the latest in a long line of Huawei phones that do not receive Google’s approval and ship with Android but not Google Play Services, which means that apps that rely on them will not work. The Android version is 10 on this one, as is the EMUI layer – it doesn’t get the EMUI 11 we saw on the Mate 40 Pro, but the variations between 10 and 11 aren’t that important.
Since the current trade war between the United States and China has impacted many Huawei companies, the company has tried to diversify its supply chains. It announced earlier this year that the Kirin 710A is its first chip made locally at Shanghai-based Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp. as part of that operation. In this ‘A’ version, it’s made on SMIC’s 14nm fabrication process.
Still rocking the same 2×4 octa-core CPU design, the 710A that’s inside the Huawei Y7a has its powerful Cortex-A73 cluster capped at 2.0GHz as opposed to the 2.2GHz in the non-A Kirin 710 while the four Cortex-A53 cores can go as high as 1.7GHz, the same value as on the TSMC-produced version. The GPU remains the same Mali-G51 MP4, as far as we can tell.
The Huawei Y7a has a quad-camera system on the rear, but only two of them are ‘real’ cameras, as is usual in the lower market segments. The main module is equipped with a 48MP Quad Bayer sensor, which has become the norm for even lower mid-tier devices. In front of it is a non-stabilized 26mm equivalent lens with an f/1.8 aperture.
The ultra-wide-angle cam has an 8MP sensor with a lens that has the field of view of a 17mm lens on a 35mm film camera. The aperture on this one is f/2.4.
Although the 8MP selfie camera hardware appears unimpressive on paper, the P smart 2021 manages to get decent images out of it. The detail is adequate, and the colours, especially the skin tones, are very pleasing. However, the dynamic range is once again lacking.
The Huawei Y7a isn’t particularly well suited for video recording. Its maximum resolution is 1080p, with 60fps or 30fps on the main camera and just 30fps on the ultra-wide. There’s no way to record in 4K. There’s also no video stabilization, which makes the experience sound a little archaic. For what it’s worth, you can switch between the regular h.264 codec and the more storage-efficient h.265.
The main cam’s video quality is barely acceptable in 1080p at 30fps – we’re talking nice colours, average detail, and limited dynamic range. 1080p at 60 frames per second has weak focus; it will scan for focus, miss, and remain out of focus.
The Huawei Y7a has a 5,000mAh battery inside, which is a generous capacity in general and more or less the industry norm – the Poco X3 NFC has a slightly larger 5,160mAh cell, while the Galaxy A31 and Realme 7 match Huawei’s figure.
The Huawei SuperCharge 22.5W adapter that comes with the Y7a is a good compromise for a phone in this price range. It takes 1:42 hours to charge the phone from zero to max, with 42 per cent remaining at the halfway point. Realmes are charging speed champions, particularly in this segment, while Xiaomi rivals are also quicker to charge than Huawei.
