The Tecno Camon 16 Premier was announced in September 2020 and launched later the same month. It is a semi-premium smartphone from Tecno with a good blend of features and cost-effectiveness. Design and Build

The Tecno Camon 16 Premier has a glass front, plastic frame and plastic back which is to be expected at its price point. The back is plastic with a camera mount bump at the centre which houses the quad-camera setup.

There is only one colour option available which is Glacial Silver. The Tecno Camon 16 Premier is a big smartphone at 170.6 x 77.2 x 9.1 mm in size and weighs in at 210g so might not be so comfortable to the smaller hands.

The screen is huge at 6.85″ IPS LCD with a resolution of 1080 x 2460 pixels and approximately 84.6% screen-to-body ratio. The pixels density is average at only 392ppi, so considering how big the screen is the images are not as sharp as one would expect.

User Interface and Performance

The Camon 16 Premier is shipped with a custom UI, HIOS 6.0 which is built on top of Android 10 and should be upgradeable to Android 11. It comes with a Mediatek MT6785 Helio G90T (12 nm) chipset with an Octa-core CPU (2×2.05 GHz Cortex-A76 & 6×2.0 GHz Cortex-A55); and a Mali-G76 MC4 GPU. The phone also has 128GB of storage and 8GB RAM making it quite handy in multitasking and has a dedicated microSDXC slot if you need extra space.

The camera setup on the Tecno Camon 16 Premier consists of a main camera that is a quad with a 64 MP, f/1.9, 26mm (wide), 1/1.73″, 0.8µm, PDAF,8 MP, f/2.3, 119˚ (ultrawide), 1/4.0″, 1.12µm, 2 MP, f/2.4, (dedicated video camera) and a 2 MP, f/2.4, (depth). It has a Penta-LED flash which supports HDR and panorama. The selfie camera is a dual 48 MP, f/2.2, 23mm (wide), 1/2.0″, 0.8µm and 8 MP, f/2.2, 105˚ (ultrawide), 1/4.0″, 1.12µm which also supports HDR with a Dual-LED flash.

Video Recording

The Tecno Camon 16 Premier records videos using the rear or main camera at 4K@30fps, 1080p@30fps, 720p@960fps and supports gyro-EIS. The selfie or front camera records video at 1080p@30fps.

The Tecno Camon 16 Premier comes with dual SIM slots using nano-SIM and supports dual standby which will help most usage. It also supports wireless LAN Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, dual-band, Wi-Fi Direct and hotspot. The Bluetooth is version 5.0 with A2DP and LE, to connect to a host of devices. Has GPS with A-GPS.
