Design and Build

We like what Samsung has done with the design of the Galaxy A series. It certainly knows how to make each Galaxy not only attractive but also distinct. We haven’t seen another phone with a back that looks like the Galaxy A42 5G’s Prism Dot pattern.

User Interface and Performance

The Galaxy A42 5G boots Android 10 with Samsung’s OneUI 2.5 on top. It is however upgradable to Android 11 with the latest OneUI 3 as of Jan 2021.

The Galaxy A42 5G is powered by the latest Snapdragon 750G 5G processor. We’re just meeting this SoC for the second time, but we already know it’s a capable piece of hardware. It’s a standard mid-range SoC that sits between the Snapdragon 765G and Snapdragon 690. It can also be thought of as the Snapdragon 730G’s successor. The 8nm node is still in use.

2x Kryo 570 Gold (Cortex-A77 derivative) at 2.2 GHz and 6x Kryo 570 Silver (Cortex-A55 derivative) at 1.8 GHz is the CPU configurations. The chipset also includes a slightly newer Adreno 619 GPU, which is supposed to be 10% faster than the SD730Adreno G’s 618.

Camera Quality

The Galaxy A42 5G has a quad-camera system on the rear, with a 48MP main camera, an 8MP ultrawide photographer, a 5MP macro snapper, and a 5MP depth sensor, all with traditional mid-range capabilities. It has the same configuration as the Galaxy A41, but with a depth-imager added. If you ever need it, there’s also a single LED flash.

A 48MP Samsung S5KGM2 ICOSELL GM2 1/2.0″ sensor with 0.8m pixels, a 24mm f/1.8 lens, and a Quad Bayer colour filter are used in the primary camera. Although a high-resolution 48MP shooting mode is available, the latter means that this camera saves 12MP images. It’s possible to use phase-detect autofocus.

Depending on the view mode, the front camera will take 12MP photos or an 8MP crop of the original. All of our selfies were taken in native 12MP mode. The 12MP selfies aren’t very detailed, but they excel in other areas such as contrast, colours, and dynamic range. These Galaxy A42 selfies are fine, but when the light isn’t perfect, the resolution of the resolved information suffers.

Video Recording

The main and ultrawide cameras on the Galaxy A42 5G record 4K@30fps images. Both support the standard 1080p mode at 30 frames per second, but neither supports 60 frames per second.
