Design and Build
The Galaxy A12 is primarily made of plastic, which is both attractive and pleasant to the touch. There is no exposed ‘frame’, so it isn’t just a rear panel and frame build. Rather, it’s a unibody design, with the back cover also enveloping the handset’s edges.
The Samsung Galaxy A12 is one of the few phones in the company’s range that does not have an OLED display. It’s a PLS panel, which is Samsung’s version of an IPS LCD. It’s anything but slim, with a diagonal of 6.5 inches, so if you’re looking for screen real estate, the A12 delivers. The 1600x720px resolution looks a little small at this scale, with a pixel density of 270ppi.
Bezels of a reasonable size surround the display. Since this isn’t a high-end handset, there’s a bit of extra black frame all around. The chin is a little chunkier, but it’s on par with rivals in the class, such as the Poco M3 or the Realme 7i. In any case, we don’t think the Galaxy A12’s bezels make it look dated or cheap.

User Interface and Performance
The Samsung Galaxy A12 comes installed with the Andriod 10 with custom OneUI 2.5. It is however upgradable to Andriod 11 and OneUI 3.0 as of Feb of 2021.
The Mediatek Helio P35 chipset is found within the Galaxy A12. Only Cortex-A53 cores are used in its octa-core CPU, with four of them clocked at up to 2.35GHz and the other four capped at 1.8GHz. It outperforms lesser Galaxies with Snapdragon 450 processors, such as the A02s/M02s, which have a 1.8GHz maximum clock speed across all 8 cores.
The PowerVR GE8320 GPU used in the Helio P35 can also be used in other Helios, such as the G25 and G35, and thus in a wide range of low-cost devices. The Galaxy A12 is available in a variety of RAM/storage configurations, ranging from 3GB/32GB to 6GB/128GB. Our test unit has a 4GB/128GB configuration.
Camera Quality
The Galaxy A12 has four cameras on its back, in a 2+2 configuration that is fairly common for the class – two ‘real’ cameras and two more to make it look better. A Samsung GM2 48MP sensor is used in the primary camera. It groups four 0.8m pixels into one with a Tetracell colour filter array, and the default image resolution is 12MP. The lens has an f/2.0 aperture and a 25mm equivalent focal length.
The ultra-wide-angle camera is another choice. A low-resolution 5MP sensor is paired with a lens that covers a 123-degree field of view. The other two cameras have sensors with a resolution of 2MP. One of the units is labelled ‘macro’ and it is designed for close-ups with a subject distance of less than 3.5cm. The other is used for collecting depth data and isn’t immediately usable for taking photos.
The selfie camera on the A12, on the other hand, isn’t bad. In bright light, the 8MP sensor captures fine detail, and it doesn’t fall apart entirely indoors in dim light. We’d like a little more saturation and warmer skin tones overall, but this Galaxy is more colour-conservative.
Video Recording
The Galaxy A12 isn’t a very good video recorder. In reality, it’s a fairly basic one, with both its main and ultra-wide cameras maxing out at 1080p/30fps. There’s also no sign of any form of stabilization.
The main camera’s video quality in 1080p is about average for a phone in this range. Since the picture is both soft and highly sharpened at the same time, there isn’t much fine detail, but there isn’t much noise either. The dynamic range is adequate, and the colours are accurate rather than punchy, but overall pleasing.
Battery Life
The Galaxy A12 is fuelled by a 5,000mAh battery, which is more than enough for its modest hardware. Indeed, the combination produces some impressive endurance numbers.
The included charger is the tried-and-true Samsung Adaptive Fast Charging device (QuickCharge 2.0 compliant), which has been around for years. It’s unclear what charging standard the phone supports, but it only uses the 15W adaptor when the screen is turned on in our tests. When the screen is turned off, the power consumption is about 11W.
